What do you do when you find yourself alone in a foreign land after life as you know it has ended? Everything and everyone in your world is forever altered; and it just keeps raining. You're already battling the illness of both your parents, mourning your best friend, and in the midst of an ugly divorce when "breast cancer" is scribbled into your medical chart. The author invites us on an eighteen-month odyssey during which she learns to answer that question in a voice that is arresting, poignant, and often hilarious. The friends, family, doctors and perfect strangers we meet along the way are people we would like to know - or hope that we have somewhere in our own lives. Breast Left Unsaid is an unvarnished true story of one woman's survival that is a must-read for anyone who has ever had reason to ask, "Can this possibly get any worse?" Because the answer is yes; and then it gets better.

This book was a slam dunk when I went shopping - I wanted something written by or about a woman experiencing breast cancer and this one had the highest rating. She did a great job of explaining/describing her experiences and a highly commendable job of dissecting the so often awful state of allopathic medicine in this country. More important, her ability to describe her feelings and how interactions with medical people who were irresponsible could be real game changers relieved my heavy heart, after my own mastectomy this month. The more I think about it, the more I appreciate her candid detail. She made me very thankful that I decided on a radical mastectomy with no reconstruction, but she made me less critical of people who think I should have done otherwise. I was a little taken aback with all the booze but I so wish her the best.

As a breast cancer survivor, this book brought me back 5 years to my own journey that I tried to erase from my memories. As I read Jude's story, I realized I could finally face my own battle. This well-written book is a must-read for anyone facing the journey, or anyone who knows someone who has or will be fighting the same battle. I couldn't put it down and recommend it.
This is a must read for anyone diagnosed with cancer or anyone who cares about someone diagnosed with cancer. Being recently diagnosed with breast cancer, it helped me so much to know that someone walked in the path that I'm embarking on, with humor, and came out the other side, despite the horrific pain and all the setbacks.
"uncensored" is right! This book is laugh out loud funny, while being a terrifying journey with the author through her diagnosis, treatment, and all the other stuff going on in her life. It is so well written that I had to put it down a few times because it was so vivid I felt like it was happening to me! I learned so much about breast cancer that I didn't know and I have much more awe and respect for people going through it. Just an amazing book!
Read in cover to cover without stopping. Yes, it was that good. I felt like I was sitting next to her through the entire journey. Very well written and a painfully truthful account of what you are faced with when stricken with an illness like cancer. The only thing better than her skill as an author is her amazing ability to remain true to herself and her bravery in coping with the horrible hand she was dealt. Highly recommended. Whether you are personally going through breast cancer treatments or know someone who is ... or any illness for that matter. This book will give you the strength and perspective you need for the fight. Jude, you rock!

One of the best books on handling breast cancer I've read. This book will make you cry, laugh, and shake your head in wonder. It also contains some of the best real life tips on how to live with breast cancer. A must read, in my opinion.
I'm reading this from the perspective of a person undergoing treatment for Stage IIb breast cancer (finished chemo, now onto radiation). I've been reading quite a few breast cancer memoirs in an attempt to get perspectives on my own journey through diagnosis and treatment.

Jude is a high-powered HR executive for a multi-national firm. Until the day her mammogram shows the first sign of her cancer, she lives an outwardly polished life; the right shoes, a husband, a house in the country, two dogs, etc.

But the universe has something in store for Jude that will crack open that polished, outer surface. First divorce, then cancer, financial difficulties, family medical issues, and the never-ending quest to reconstruct "something nice" where her breast used to be. Around Jude forms an "inner circle" of friends and family who rally around her, walk 60 miles for her, and take on the daily slog of getting her through treatment.

Jude comes off in the book as sometimes pushy and abrasive (she describes herself making a scene until a doctor comes back to answer questions or at a hotel until she gets the room she wants), but having to undergo this thing without a partner is the true test of her strength and resilience. Her experience at Sloan-Kettering, a major cancer treatment center much like Mayo (where I am being treated) was surprisingly different in terms of the amount of doctors, scans, and tests she had. Although, this may be in part due to the choice she made to reconstruct after mastectomy while I'm on lumpectomy and rads.

I was also interested in hearing about her bouts of nausea and drinking/partying, where the meds I received (Emend/compazine/ativan) pretty much kept my own dance with the red devil under control, she had a much harder time of it in the story, especially well portrayed by her stories near the end of trying to build up a little muscle tone in her legs through walks that normally wouldn't have caused her to break a sweat, but are portrayed here with all the aches, extra layers of clothes, and pains necessary to accomplish.

For me the story was interesting in terms of the cancer and Jude figuring out how to handle friends who both surprised her with help and graciousness as well as faded out of her life. The thread about her friend David, who passed away before the book starts, wasn't as strong a rumination on mortality as I think it was meant to be as I felt I didnt' know him at all and so couldn't mourn him as Jude so obviously did. Her high-powered HR life, New York fashion trips, major fundraising for the walk, etc were also interesting, but a bit out of my own experience so I didn't identify with her so much as cheer her along her own journey.

Worthwhile memoir without too many scary, gross bits (descriptions for mastectomy drain ick!)
This is an exceptionally well-written little book about a cancer survivor's discovery of her disease and the harrowing and sometimes funny journey through her ordeal. It is very easy to read, eye-opening about the reality of the treatments, and inspiring to everyone who faces such a life-altering event. Jude is such a good writer that it seems an easy communication between friends; I have seldom been so engaged in someone's stuggle, and would recommend this book to anyone..... we all know someone facing these decisions.
