From bad dog to best friend, Dakota's story is a must for anyone with a problem dog. From pottying all over the house, chewing and destruction, Dakota was transformed into a dog who could be trusted with full run of the house all day.
She came to us as a used dog, abandoned by owners who couldn't handle her. When we first adopted Dakota from the dog pound she couldn't be left alone for one single minute. One year later we were able to take her on a road trip and she was a model citizen. Dakota now brings us joy and laughter instead of "Don't Kill the Dog" sticky notes.
Don't give up on your dog and abandon him to a shelter. You have the power to save your dog from a life of revolving doors and people who don't want him. Locked inside of every bad dog is a good dog who just needs a bit of encouragement to come out. Transform your dog into man's best friend as he was meant to be. Bad Dog to Best Friend will help you learn the ropes.
Bad Dog to Best Friend is full of dog training tips and advice and gives step-by-step methods for potty training your dog, weaning your dog from a crate, teaching your dog not to chew, and you'll get the inside scoop on why your dog doesn't listen to you. Learn about the common mistakes dog owners make. Every technique we used, both the successes and the failures, we offer in the hopes of helping other dog owners.
For those of you with Australian Cattle Dog/Siberian Husky mixes, there's a whole chapter devoted just to the Ausky breed. If you own an Ausky you're in for a wild ride. Learn what to expect from your Ausky and how to handle the quirks of this unusual breed.

This book would make a valuable addition to the library of anyone considering adopting a troubled dog. The author is honest about what worked and what didn't as she and her husband transformed a neglected, anxiety-ridden shelter dog--even when she used unconventional methods. Unlike some, I understand the use of buzz collars in a temporary, supervised manner when a dog is showing aggression toward other dogs or people. I believe the author was responsible in the way she handled this difficult situation. The information on Auskies (half Australian cattle dog/ half Siberian husky) was interesting. The unusual confluence of traits made for some trying as well as endearing characteristics. My previous dog was an Australian shepherd, so the tips about dealing with nipping and darting rang true.
The book is repetitive in places with some anecdotes being related two or three times. I probably read the word poop--admittedly not my favorite word--enough times to last a decade. I also would have liked more stories about the best friend that Dakota later became.
As the owner of a sometimes bad shelter dog of my own, I can only applaud and admire the author for the sacrifices she made not only to prevent Dakota's demise, but also to bring out the best friend hidden inside.

Great book!! Fast reading. Takes you into the life of a real person and their dogs. Anyone who has ever adopted a dog or owns a dog should read this book. Even if your pet is not a challenge, you can learn how to keep them a model citizen. I read the book in 1 1/2 days cause I could not put it down. Join me and learn more about how to live happily ever after with your four legged friends.
Very useful book, has helped me understand some things about my Australian Cattle Dog (blue heeler). The dog in the story is a mix of Husky and ACD, an " Ausky", who was adopted and had much to overcome in her past. In addition to an inspiring story i also found useful training tips.
Awesome Story
This book is written well and contains many interesting insights into the amusing and sometimes Very frustrating Ausky dog breed. It has given me renewed hope that my Ausky dog will be ok!
I purchased this book to help me in the process of training my Dalmatian puppy who could be very strong willed at times. This book covers all the angles, very informative and helpful. If you have a strong willed best friend or just need helpful training tips! The writer is adorable and she has some wonderful stories to tell about her four legged best friends, you laugh with her and learn from her! I could not put this book down and finished it in one day which is very unusual for me. This book will teach you everything you need to know to make your bad dog your best friend. LOVED IT!!!!!
Sharon has clearly lived with an Ausky and offers good tips to deal with this strange and wonderful dog ( especially a broken one). She describes the "Wow did I just see him/her do that?" experience very well. I'm still studying my Ausky to try to understand how she can jump or levitate 3 ft into the air without seeming to move a muscle. Running figure 8s parallel to the ground is another experience to behold. Some of her "never do's, such as "always keep your Ausky on a leash" I can live without, probably because we live in the country.
I have had dogs my whole life, most have come to me as if they were soul mates, until one dog ate my couch and turned it into a million balls of foam and other dog deposits. This book is the story of one caring, patient owner's efforts to tame a doggy hurricane. Unlike, "how to" books that are bland and boring, the author shares her personal experience in both learning by trial and error and applying the principles dog trainers must learn. In the process an out of control dog becomes her best friend. Walt Disney said, "I would rather entertain with the hopes of educating then educate with the hopes of entertaining." This author has taken Walt Disney's approach. If you are planning to add a "Best Friend" to your home, this book is a guide to making that friendship become a reality. Get it!
